Harrisburg Mile

My plan was to totally post this yesterday, but………I was BEAT!! Zzzzzz I am still tired today!! Lol

Last night I participated in the Harrisburg Mile, it’s a pretty big race (over 2,000 runners) for our area that fundraises for the local YMCA and their children’s programs/activities.  There is always a huge turnout and they have several heats, even an Elite Heat, which is amazing to watch!!  They go so stinking FAST!!  The Elite Male finished at 4:18.72 and the Elite Female finished at 4:57.66.  That is absolutely incredible!!

They also have a Fun Run Mile and a Half Pint/Half Mile.  🙂  I ran the Half Mile with my Love Bug and then ran the mile in the individual competition.  We had a fantastic time!  This was actually the first year I have been able to participate since I found out about it and was very excited to do it.  It’s been YEARS since I ran a fast, competitive mile so I was quite excited (and nervous!) to see how I would do.  Before I talk about how I did, I wanna talk about how stinking proud I am of my little guy! 🙂

He was very excited to be able to run with Mama and he kept trying to warm up and run around, but I was so worried he would use up all his energy!  He kept saying, “Mama I have energy to run, I will be fine!” lol  You can obviously tell who was more nervous about the race.  There were lots of children there from ones being pushed in strollers to kids his age and older (he is 5yrs).  It was a lot of fun to watch the determination on all the children’s faces.  Love Bug did really well, he ran the majority of the distance and only stopped for two brief ‘walk breaks.’  The one thing that helped him to make it through the finish was when he saw the Bouncy House at the Finish Line!!  🙂  He finished the half mile in 6:39!!

My heat was the 30-39 age group and our heat didn’t go for a full hour after the Half Pint.  It was nice to have a little break and to let Love Bug play and do some of the fun activities.  I was lucky enough that his father and fiance’ decided to come and cheer him on and they stayed with him while I had to run.  I was pleasantly surprised by that, since his father has not been the most supportive of my running ventures.

This was probably the most nerves I’ve experienced before a race in a long time! lol A lot of it has to do with the fact that I haven’t run a fast mile since High School!! 0_O  Many of my running friends had goal times and paces they wanted to meet.  For me, I just wanted to make it to the finish and feel like I had pushed myself.  I went out fairly fast and was happy with my split at the half mile, I think I heard him yell out 3:20 or so when I ran past. I definitely felt my pace and speed drop after the half, which means I probably went out too fast!! ;-P  Once I saw the finish and my son on the sidelines, I decided to try to go all out.  It was hard, but I felt great in the end.  I finished with an official time of 7:34.37……not too shabby! ;-P

Overall, it was a great time with great finishes for us both and great memories!!  One thing I know for sure is, I will stick to longer distances!!! 🙂
