Woohoo! It’s May, which means, its birthday month and the annual trek out to Pittsburgh for the Pittsburgh Marathon weekend! Last year, I ran the half marathon and this time I was going more for fun and to celebrate my birthday! 🙂 I did end up running the 5K which took place on Saturday.
Once again, Jeff P, a Pittsburgh native and a member of our local running community, recruited over 100 local runners to travel out to Pittsburgh together for the marathon weekend. How awesome is that?!
We ended up with something like 140 runners coming from the Harrisburg area to run together in Pittsburgh…..so cool! We shut down a local restaurant for our pre-race pasta dinner and….*cough* birthday celebration! 😉 It was so much fun to be able to celebrate my birthday weekend with all my running friends. I really had a wonderful time.
We arrived to the city on Friday night and settled into our hotel room after picking up our race packets. Saturday morning was my race and I didn’t want to stay up too late. Looking at the map, I determined it was about a mile from the hotel to the starting line. I decided to just go ahead and get a nice warm up mile in! 😉 It was well worth it! The city was beautiful first thing in the morning, it was very quiet and still downtown. I stopped to take pictures of the city skyline a few times because it was just so pretty. The weather was just right, it was mid-fifties when I left the hotel. I ran across the river and over to PNC Park where the race began.
Pretty soon, hundreds and hundreds of runners were arriving. I overheard the announcer say that the 5K had sold out at 4,500 participants…..what?!?!?! That’s insane! I have never ran a 5K that big before…..larger races, but a 5K?! Woah!
It was a good thing I had decided not to race this race, as it was way too crowded to really be able to do that. There was no way to get away from them all! 😉 Soon after I finished I wandered around the finish line party for a bit and then went to find COFFEE!!! Ahhh! I was really starting to go through withdrawal, lol. Thankfully, it didn’t take me long and I got my beloved coffee. 🙂 Next up…..cheering on the Kids Marathon! This was the BEST!! Oh my gosh, I had so much fun cheering on all those kids running their little hearts out. Their race was a mile long, they basically ran the last mile of the 5K that I had just completed. I just loved seeing the looks on their faces once they heard us cheering for them. They would suddenly get a big smile on their face and the next thing you knew, they were off speeding down the street!! My cheeks hurt from smiling so much!
I began heading back to the hotel to get cleaned up. As I was walking down the street, I suddenly hear someone yell out, “Hey! Aren’t you Rnnr318?!” I looked up and there was a girl that I follow on IG and that follows me! A fellow runner from the Harrisburg/Shippensburg area that I have never actually met in person. How crazy is that? The first thing that came to mind was it’s a small world after all lol. Naturally, we had to get a pic for IG! ha, ha, ha!
Next up…..EXPO and hanging with friends! Saturday was all about having fun which was great! Don’t get me wrong, I love running races, training, putting in the work, and going out there, but it was nice to not have to stress about eating right, getting enough rest, etc. before the race. I met up with a few of my friends and we headed out to wander around the expo.
Soon, we were all meeting with the rest of the Harrisburg group to get our picture taken. We had to prove that over 100 of us did come out to do this together! Lol Originally, we had planned to meet inside the convention center and get our picture taken there, but we ended up going outside since there were so many of us. You may ask, how do you corral over 100 people to go through a crowded convention center to outside along the river?? You ask Emily of course! 😉 Lol I volunteered to be the town crier of sorts to help direct everyone outside. Ha, ha, that was quite a funny sight. Here is a picture of us once we all got outside along the river.
We eventually got a few great shots of the whole group. Not everyone who was in town from our group made it to the picture, but we got a good number of people. I could seriously go on and on about how much fun I had that weekend, but I don’t wanna bore you! lol 🙂
I will just share some more pictures below of all the fun!
